I always hated the idea of doing any kind of planning when it comes to writing a story or novel but when I finished my first novel a few years ago I realised it had so many subplots it was hard to follow.
Without planning it is hard to keep track of what each character is doing or even the names of them. When you spend a number of years writing a novel it is easy to forget what surname you gave your character at the beginning when you are halfway through.
Creating my novel:
I loved writing that novel, it was so fun. It had all sorts of crazy things happen. After that I wrote another novel which made a lot more sense but towards the end of it I was struggling to know how to end it.
It was at that point that I attended a ‘Progressing your novel’ course where the tutor suggested doing a synopsis for each chapter. This was amazing advice and helped me to figure out where I was going next.
She also said don’t try to carry on and write more chapters just to get to a certain word count. So I ended it sooner than I would have done but then through various edits it got longer again.
Plan!
So I think that some planning is necessary. However I don’t like to over plan. Sometimes I find that when I plan out a whole story, by the time I have spent all that time planning it, I have got bored of the story. I like to start a story with a vague idea and see where it goes. Sometimes it surprises me. I feel it spoils the creativity to plan too much.
